I am relieved that the turning part of the job is complete and very pleased with the result. The machining went through various evolutions, as did the drive system, starting with Mpathisi and Zuki pushing the corners to a hand crank on the thick end. After weathering for six months, we trimmed this mighty Sugar Gum beam to it’s final dimensions for the Mostert’s Mill windshaft. Gentle taper and all. Now all we need to do is make a lathe to take the 6,5 metre 950kg shaft so that we can Great to revisit this bar at Waterkloof Wine Estate @waterkloofwines that I built 10 years ago.
